The Desire for Change

I like resolutions, I am of the mindset that we can make them year-round, but January is always a time of new beginnings.

The desire for change can be such a good and healthy aspect to our lives. The dark and cold of the winter months are often linked to our own need to turn inward, do self-reflection, and germinate new plans and ideas.

Can you allow yourself the luxury of thinking about your life, where you are now and where you would like to be? What would you like to change? What things do you wish were different?

The danger for me is not that I can't think of anything to change, but that my list can be very long. There isn't anything inherently wrong with a long list of changes, goals, resolutions. However, when we feel we have so much to do on so many fronts, we can feel overwhelmed - which can lead to changing nothing at all.

That is one reason that I encourage clients to set small goals that are measurable and attainable. Take a big goal, like cleaning out the guest room closet, and break it into small goals - like working on the closet for 10 minutes a day (and use a timer.) The big task is transformed into small tasks - which are more easily achievable.

Bob Wiley was right, Baby Steps are an essential part of making life changes.

new Year's Resolutions - Money

Are you in debt?

Do you struggle to cover than unexpected emergency expense like a car repair or new heater/air conditioner?

Here are some tips for improving your financial health...

Use your debit card or pay with cash. The best way to get out of the credit card merry-go-round is to just stop using them.

Pay more than the minimum payments on your credit card balances.

Be sure that you save money regularly. Saving is not a luxury, it is necessary to take care of emergencies as well as provide support for your retirement.

New Year's Resolutions - Exercise

Trying to get in shape? Here are some ideas to help you...

Look for simple ways to increase exercise - take the stairs, use a pedometer to monitor the increase in steps.

Change up your workout routine. If you usually do the treadmill, try the exercise bike or elliptical machine.

If you always use weight machines, it is worth your time to learn the proper technique for using free weights. The free weights will challenge you to maintain balance, posture, and muscle control.

New Year's Resolutions - Losing Weight

In my mind, losing weight, getting in shape, eating better, etc are at the top of many New Year's Resolution lists.

If you are hoping for a healthier you in 2008, here are some tips for you:

Set small goals - try to think of eating healthfully for this meal or just for today. This is often more helpful than thinking, "I can never eat _____ again."

Likewise, think about losing a pound or two per week rather than losing 20 pounds - the small goal seems attainable and the 20 lbs can seem impossible.

New Year's Resolutions

2008 is here, and like many people, you might be ready for a fresh start in the new year. Over the next few days, I'll be posting some ways to help kick-start your new year.

While I work on my resolution suggestions, I welcome you to post YOUR new year's resolutions. What do you want to change in '08? What do you want to add to your life? What would you like to give up?

To get the ball rolling, here are some of my resolutions:

1 Continue going to the gym regularly
2. Pay off some debt
3. Have a great vegetable garden this year
4. Read a book per month that is not related to my business
5. Try every vegetable that my HEB sells - not all on the same night

Monday evening

I just finished dinner on the screened porch - outside, It is January 8th and it is warm.

I dined alfresco - no coats, no mittens, no sweaters needed. It is a lovely evening, the crickets are chirping - maybe they are cicadas - it is absolutely gorgeous.

I spent the day doing desk work, watering the gardens, and enjoying the fresh air.

Wherever you are, dear readers, I hope 2008 is off to a good beginning. I wish you a year filled with creativity, prosperity, good health and many blessings.

I am off to listen to the sound of the breeze through the trees..
